Morty Halberg Bio
Morty Halberd is CarnieVille’s so-called security guard, though most folks agree he’s more decoration than defense. With his bent posture, weather-worn cap, and a badge that looks like it came out of a cracker-jack box, Morty shuffles around the grounds with the air of a man who’s seen it all, and cares very little about any of it. He blows his whistle at kids running too fast, scolds clowns for “blocking the fire lanes,” and falls asleep in his folding chair at least twice a night. To the guests, he’s part of the show; to the crew, he’s an old dog with no bite, but plenty of bark.
Behind the scenes, Morty is equal parts nuisance and comfort. He tells endless stories about “the old days” of the circus, half of which no one believes, and most of which trail off into muttering about how things used to be done “properly.” He piddles around the midway with his lantern and halberd (a rusty relic he insists is “company issue”), using them more like walking sticks than weapons. Carnie Ev humors him, calling him “the last line of defense,” while Presidenté Ip sneers that Morty couldn’t stop a raccoon raid, let alone a real threat. Still, Morty keeps showing up, loyal as a shadow, even if no one quite asked him to.
What makes Morty Halberd essential to CarnieVille is that his crusty presence adds texture to the chaos. He may not stop trouble, but he slows it down with a glare or a cough, giving the real muscle, like Strongman Wayne, a chance to step in. Guests get a laugh from his bumbling patrols, and the crew secretly appreciates that someone’s always wandering with an eye, however dim, on the grounds. Morty’s not the guardian of gates or the scourge of villains; he’s just Morty, piddling through the sawdust, blowing his whistle at shadows, and reminding everyone that even security can be a circus act.
