Capy the Capybara

Barkeep. Brawler. Big softie with a glare sharp enough to shuck a coconut.

Species & Role

Species: Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris)

Role: Owner, bartender, bouncer, and backbone of The Coconut bar. Capy keeps the island’s most sacred institution running with an iron stare and a wooden spoon.

Visual Signature

  • Gruff Scowl: His resting face is a permanent low-key threat.
  • Apron & Towel: Always in a stained apron with a rag slung over one shoulder, like he’s just cleaned up someone else’s mess, which he has.
  • Chipped Machete: Kept behind the bar, mostly used to open coconuts. Mostly.
  • Broad Shoulders: Physically massive, moves like a tank in slow motion.

Primary Hangout

The Coconut: He built it with his own paws after washing ashore on Palo Miki with a barrel of rum and no intention of leaving. It’s not just a bar, it’s a fortress, a confession booth, and sometimes a fight club.

Personality

Gruff. Loyal. No-nonsense. Capy is the ultimate protector type, he won’t say much unless he has to, but when he speaks, everyone listens. He’s got a hidden heart under his bark but hides it like it owes him money. He’s fiercely loyal to the island crew and runs the bar like it’s the last line of civilization.

Backstory

Rumor has it Capy was once a deep-river smuggler on the mainland before a double-cross and a sinking boat sent him drifting toward Palo Miki. He never confirms or denies his past, just says, “That ain’t my story anymore.” What we do know: he built The Coconut from wreckage and old rum crates, and nobody else has ever touched the register.

Philosophy

“Life gives you the waves. You build your own damn board.”

Capy doesn’t believe in fate, he believes in muscle, grit, and staying three steps ahead of the nonsense. He’s the kind of guy who won’t tell you what to do, he’ll just give you a look that tells you you’re doing it wrong.

Catchphrases

  • “Drink or don’t. Just stop hovering.”
  • “If it’s worth saying, say it twice. If it’s not, shut up.”
  • “This bar’s open, but my patience ain’t.”
  • “Clean your mess or clean your conscience, your choice.”

Key Relationships

  • Phil: Constant verbal sparring partner. Capy acts annoyed, but he keeps Phil’s favorite stool open every night.
  • Skye: Thinks of her like a niece. Secretly funds her tinkering by "losing bets" to her.
  • Gus: The only one Capy lets near the sound system. He respects his hustle, even if he pretends otherwise.
  • Auntie Mo: Calls her “The Breeze.” She gets him to talk more than anyone else.
  • Tilly: Her gossip drives him crazy, but she’s the only one he’ll brew chamomile tea for when her voice is hoarse.
  • Lobes: “That bird gives me the creeps,” Capy mutters. But he’s put up a perch just for him.

Hidden Depth

Capy’s hard exterior hides deep loss, some say he’s still mourning someone from the mainland, but he won’t say. He never leaves the island, and never lets anyone leave The Coconut worse than they came in. He’s got secret shelves full of old ship logs, herbal brews, and books of island poetry no one knows he reads.

Once, during a typhoon, he lashed himself to the bar’s main post and held it steady through the night. When they asked why, he just said, “It’s my job.”
